Paper pulp in the raw is rather dull and requires a chemical treatment to whiten, brighten and improve quality before being transformed into paper. In the past, environmentally unfriendly elemental chlorine (EC) was the chemical of choice. The printing industry is in the forefront in establishing its Eco credentials by issuing certificates for the following improved bleaching processes:
· EFC (Elemental Chlorine Free) chlorine dioxide replaces elemental chlorine to bleach the paper.
· TCF (Totally Chlorine Free) the paper is bleached by using hydrogen peroxide instead of chlorine. TCF is the most environmentally acceptable process.
